Book Blogger Confessions is a meme that posts the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month, where book bloggers “confess” and vent about topics that are unique to us. Feel free to share, vent and offer solutions.
Today’s Topic: Do you have a monthly book budget? How has it changed since you started blogging? Do you get more free books now that you have access to publishers/authors/other bloggers or is your book buying budget even higher than when you started?
Thought: A budget? Limiting myself? Madness! No, seriously, I don’t have one and it’s not because I’m freer with my money and book spending ways. I used to spend roughly 20-30 dollars a month on books and would tell myself I shouldn’t go over too often. That was mostly during the first years of blogging too, when I was attempting to behave myself (it didn’t always work).
When I think about it now, I can make that stretch over a year. Why? I don’t really need to buy any. My desire to buy books has diminished greatly. There’s several reasons for it. Roughly half of my personal library is to-read, I receive books for review on a regular basis, and if I really feel as though I’m wanting something to read that I can’t get via my collection or a publisher/author, then I will visit the library.
What it mostly comes down to though is space. I don’t have enough of it and after living in a situation where I had to squeeze books in to wherever they would fit, I’m not really interested in going back to that. That’s my biggest thing, space, and having enough options. I must sound so unenthusiastic about it all to someone who still has a love for acquiring books on a regularly. Don’t get me wrong, I am grateful (very, very grateful), but my habit is fed. Really well! If I continued buying books each month I would feel gluttonous.
