Book Blogger Confessions: Scary Books

Book Blogger Confessions is a meme that posts the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month, where book bloggers “confess” and vent about topics that are unique to us. Feel free to share, vent and offer solutions.

Hosted by For What It’s Worth and Midnyte Reader. Check out the Book Blogger Confessions Schedule to see what topics are coming up.

Today’s Topic: Happy Halloween!  Do you like to read scary books?  Why or why not?  If so, what is the scariest book you ever read and why does it deserve that honor?

Bonus question! Just for fun – have you ever dressed as a literary character for Halloween? Brave enough to show a photo if you have one?

Thought: Not as much as I used to. I’ve discovered as the years have worn on I tend to feel too much unease with true horror, which I used to love, in all forms of entertainment. Maybe my life has had too much unpleasant crap in it and I need to be reminded of good things. Who knows? The fact of the matter is I have become squeamish at times when I never used to be and I become physically ill when I witness or read about certain acts. I kind of don’t want to associate something I enjoy with feeling sick to the stomach. I still appreciate a good thrill though, but with boundaries, and I will continue being drawn to dark or strange material, as long as it’s not full-blown horror.

As for the scariest book I’ve read, all that comes to mind is The Dark by James Herbert. I attempted to read it years ago and could not finish it. I don’t know if it’s actually any good, but it sure messed with my head at the time. So much so I will never pick it up again, no matter how much curiosity I have for how it ended. Never again.

I have never dressed up as a literary character. For Halloween or anything else. I’m not a big celebrator of Halloween. It’s not a popular holiday here in Australia and being a diabetic; trick or treating as a kid wasn’t appealing. I’ve never been to a costume party either and to be honest I have no idea who I would go as. One of the Harry Potter characters feels like a safe bet, but I think that’s more of a fallback plan. Maybe someone from Alice in Wonderland? Yep, all my ideas are original! I’ll just stick with making bookish references at non-themed parties.

What about you? How do you feel about horror and have you ever dressed up as a literary character, or would you? Feel free to share in the comments or let me know if you’re taking part on your blog.

  1. I remember my college days when my fave habit is to read horror books. And i tell you what it feels like…scary much specially when you’re in the dark and experience the same set up on the story you read, it feels like all the scary things in the book will come on your way and it’ll happen…the moment I close my eyes it feels like someone is standing beside your bed and staring at you…Creepy! but i didn’t try to wear Halloween costumes…

  2. This sounds like an interesting meme! I don’t particularly enjoy reading or watching horror either. The images haunt me for days afterwards! But every now when I’m extra brave I do attempt to read some horror. The eeriest book I’ve ever read is The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.
