Comic Book and Graphic Novel Challenge

I’m already deciding on what challenges to do next year, but I also just feel like doing a challenge now and I feel like reading some comic books. So I’ve decided to do a comic/graphic novel challenge.

I’m not going to set a certain number or style or theme or anything like that. I’m just going to see how many I can read in a short amount of time (like a month) and go through a list of ones I have wanted to read as well.

So far on my list I have the following;

  1. Maus by Art Spiegelman
  2. Neon Genesis Evangelion
  3. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World
  4. The Amazing Screw On Head by Mike Mignola (Hellboy author)
  5. The Stand (it’s been made into a comic and it’s one of my most read books)
  6. Dark Tower (graphic novel version)

That’s pretty much it so far. I don’t really know what to look for or where to start otherwise (besides Batman or Hellboy, but I don’t if I’m going to read those yet).

Otherwise I’m looking for suggestions if anyone has any. I’ve read V for Vendetta (loved it), 300 (disliked it), Watchmen (enjoyed it), Requiem Vampire Knight (absolutely love it), Dracula by Hippolyte (love it), and I read Heavy Metal.

I’m interested in dystopia, post-apocalyptic, horror, steampunk, historical fiction, supernatural, Warhammer 40K, and dark fantasy, but if there’s something else that might be interesting or worth reading I’ll consider it (as long as it’s not romance and I’m very particular when it comes to Manga or at least the art of it).

So if anyone has a suggestion please let me know! I would really appreciate it. I don’t think I’ll start doing this till November or December. Depends on my mood really.

  1. I really love James O’Barr’s The Crow. The artwork is awesome!

Also, I bought one of the Firefly/Serenity graphic novels at Supernova. You can have a look at that if you like.

Aside from those I’ve mostly read Witchblade (love it!), Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman & The Books of Magic, Buffy/Angel, Vampire Hunter D, Fables, The Phantom, X-Men, Tin Tin, Asterix & Obelix, and a bunch of manga. Basically I go after the ones with pretty pictures and most of them were at the library. The last four where what I grew up on.

So I would say have a look at The Crow, Firefly and The Sandman – and _maybe_ Witchblade… ? I dable, so I can’t really go into much detail.

    • I never really liked Crow, but I wonder if I’d like it more in a comic? I might have to check it out to see.

Thanks heaps for that Jacq, it gives me some food for thought and something to check out. I think I’m up for almost anything comic and graphic novel wise.

I’m also hosting the challenge (and a bunch of other ones for next year) so I will be reading some, not just talking about it. I really feel like comics at the moment. I think it’s the pictures and foggy brain.
